In fashion, people often talk about the obvious things first: the garments, the lighting, the music, the makeup, the walk, the attitude, and the cameras flashing from every direction. What many people do not talk about enough, however, is hygiene. Yet hygiene is one of the most important parts of being a professional model walking for a fashion designer at a fashion show. A model can have the perfect height, the right look, and a powerful runway presence, but poor hygiene can quietly ruin the entire experience for designers, stylists, fellow models, and backstage teams.

Fashion shows are intimate working environments. Models are being zipped into garments by dressers, adjusted by designers, styled by hair artists, and touched up by makeup artists all within very close physical range. In those fast-moving moments, there is no room for unpleasant body odor, bad breath, unclean skin, dirty nails, or clothing underneath the garments that has not been properly cared for. Hygiene is not just about smelling nice. It is about respect, professionalism, presentation, and making everyone around you comfortable enough to do their job.

A designer puts an enormous amount of trust into the model wearing their work. Some garments are custom-made, delicate, expensive, and emotionally important to the creator. When a model steps into that piece, they are not just putting on clothing. They are stepping into someone’s vision. That means the model must arrive prepared, clean, and fully aware that their body becomes part of the final presentation. No designer wants sweat stains, strong odors, stained undergarments, oily skin rubbing onto fabrics, or neglected feet stepping into high-end shoes. Backstage areas can be crowded, hot, and stressful. Models may change multiple times in a short period, share tight spaces, and stand close together while waiting for their cue. In that environment, hygiene becomes even more important. Deodorant, a clean body, fresh breath, clean hair, and neat grooming all help maintain a pleasant atmosphere. It is a matter of consideration. The fashion industry moves quickly, and people remember how working with someone feels. A model who is known for being clean, prepared, and easy to work with leaves a much stronger impression than one who ignores basic self-care.

Hygiene also speaks to discipline. Fashion is glamorous in photographs, but in real life it demands routine, preparation, and responsibility. A model who understands hygiene understands the assignment. They know to shower before call time, wear clean undergarments, keep nails clean, use deodorant, keep breath mints nearby, care for their feet, and avoid heavy scents that may interfere with the designer’s atmosphere or trigger sensitivities backstage. They understand that being polished is part of the total package.

For emerging models especially, hygiene can be the silent factor that opens or closes doors. People in fashion talk. Designers, stylists, and coordinators often recommend models to one another. Talent may get you noticed, but professionalism gets you invited back. Cleanliness is part of that professionalism. It shows maturity. It shows awareness. It shows that you do not just want to wear fashion, but that you understand how to honor it.

At the highest level, runway modeling is about presenting beauty, control, and detail. Hygiene supports all three. It protects garments, respects the team, strengthens confidence, and reinforces a model’s reputation. In an industry built on image, details matter, and hygiene is one of the details that should never be overlooked.

A great runway walk may turn heads, but clean presentation keeps the spotlight where it belongs: on the designer’s vision and the model’s excellence. That is why hygiene is not a small matter in fashion. It is an essential part of the job.

Not so fresh and so clean!

On another note, let’s stop acting like hygiene is some optional side quest when you’re walking in a fashion show. Bad body odor is not just “a little funk.” It can soak right into a designer’s clothes, especially when you’re wearing custom pieces, fitted garments, lined jackets, delicate fabrics, or anything worn close to the body. Nobody wants to spend hours creating a masterpiece just for it to come back smelling like hot onions, old sweat, and bad decisions. That is not “runway energy.” That is biological warfare in couture.

And let’s be real about it: when your odor is loud, people notice. Stylists notice. Dressers notice. Makeup artists notice. The other models definitely notice. Folks may be too polite to say it to your face, but trust, they will suddenly become very creative about keeping their distance. Nobody wants to be trapped backstage shoulder to shoulder with somebody who smells like they sprinted to the venue in three hoodies and a trash bag. Fashion shows already get hot, crowded, and chaotic. Add one musty model to the mix and now everybody is suffering in silence.

It also creates a bad reputation. In fashion, people talk. If you become known as the person whose body odor enters the room before they do, that can follow you faster than your best runway clip. Being fresh is part of being professional. So before you zip yourself into somebody’s expensive design, do the honorable thing: shower, use deodorant, freshen your breath, and come clean from head to toe. Let your walk leave a lasting impression, not your stank.
