ICONIQUE MAGAZINE: This is actually my first time visiting Steve’s Meltdown at the City Foundry in St Louis Mo 

The City Foundry in St. Louis, Missouri was formerly the Century Electric Foundry complex. The foundry was built in 1929 and operated until 2007. It was a major industrial site in the city that produced electric motors and generators. The Lawrence Group acquired the site and developed it into a mixed-use destination called City Foundry STL. 

Steve’s Meltdown, an “elevated grilled cheese” concept, started as a ghost kitchen within Steve’s Hot Dogs on South Grand, quickly gaining popularity through third-party delivery apps and evolving into a brick-and-mortar favorite. The concept, launched in January 2023, quickly gained traction, leading to a brick-and-mortar location at City Foundry STL. Steve’s Meltdown specializes in gourmet grilled cheese sandwiches and scratch-made soups, with a focus on quality, creativity, and community. 

While in line, I discussed my intentions doing a food review with a few fans of Steve’s and the testimonies was amazing. One lady said that she comes here to eat lunch several times a week. 

I asked her what grilled cheeses she likes the most and she said that she likes all of them.  She said that you can’t go wrong with ordering anything off the menu. Every grilled cheese is amazing, she said. 

As I introduced myself to Chef Maurice, I told him also what my intentions were and he said that I would have a great experience and I would definitely be satisfied with my order. 

I ordered the “Don Ho Grilled Cheese” with a side order of crispy crinkled fries that Maurice Suggested it for me. He said it was the Best selling grilled cheese this week.  It’s described as a Sweet and Spice Pepper Jack grilled cheese on two fresh sourdough slices topped with ham, pineapple jelly, a light brushing of Steve’s Honey Chipotle BBQ Sauce. Served with a side order of BBQ sauce for dipping. I ordered mine without the Ham. 

I’m thinking to myself that in just a few moments I will be eating a grilled cheese sandwich with BBQ sauce on it. I was mind blown of the thought of such a combination. 

Maurice began to make my grilled cheese sandwich and I had the honor of watching him make my grilled cheese sandwich from beginning to end. 

Upon close examination, I was surprised at how thick and weighted my grilled cheese sandwich was. That in itself was amazing because most grilled cheese sandwiches have been average and lightweight compared to this sandwich. 

I poured some of the BBQ sauce on top of the grilled cheese and I took one bite and it was over for me. I nearly choked at how great this grilled cheese sandwich was made and how it tasted. The spicy pepper jack cheese was very good. I could tell that I wasn’t your typical store bought cheese.  This had to be an aged because of the texture and the flavor notes. The Pineapple Jelly gave this grilled cheese an extra advantage. I balanced out the cheese and made it very smooth for this thick slice of cheese to be devoured. 

Now to the Honey Chipotle BBQ Sauce. It was really thick and rich. The BBQ sauce was not overpowering and made for a great combination bring the whole sandwich together. My only concern is the BBQ sauce salt content is kindly high. I developed a slight headache from it. Nonetheless, The “Don Ho Grilled Cheese Sandwich” experience is superb. 

I would recommend Steve’s Meltdown to anyone. It takes making grilled cheese sandwiches to another level.
