Iconique Magazine – Slim & Husky’s Nashville; Food Review-Red Light Special Pizza

Slim & Husky’s Pizza Beeria: A Slice of Sunshine in Nashville
There’s something about a spontaneous road trip that makes food taste better. Maybe it’s the thrill of discovery, or maybe it’s the satisfaction of knowing that what you’re about to eat was worth every mile. On a sunny afternoon, I decided to make that 3 ½ hour drive from Atlanta to Nashville, Tennessee on my way to St Louis with one goal in mind — to finally experience Slim & Husky’s Pizza Beeria for myself. I’d heard the buzz for years: a hip, Black-owned pizzeria serving up artisan pies with urban flair, a playlist that grooves while you eat, and a vibe that feels like family. But none of that truly prepared me for the moment I took my first bite of the Red Light Special.

I walked into Slim & Husky’s with the sun still shining bright, that kind of perfect day where the breeze feels like a soundtrack to good food. The smell of freshly baked dough, garlic, and cheese hit me before I even looked at the menu. The place was alive — laughter, music, and the subtle hum of people enjoying something that clearly meant more than just lunch.
Now, I’m no stranger to pizza. From St Louis thin-crust pizza to Chicago deep dish, I’ve had it all. But Slim & Husky’s has its own lane, and they ride it smooth. Their concept is simple yet genius — flatbread-style pizzas that are made fresh to order, with bold names and even bolder flavors.
I knew exactly what I came for: The Red Light Special. The name alone has that kind of smooth energy that makes you lean in. When my pizza arrived, the presentation was beautiful — a golden, slightly crisp flatbread topped with Garlic Shallot Oil, a 5 Cheese Blend, Tomatoes, and Fresh Basil, all drizzled with Marinara Sauce. I could tell instantly this wasn’t your average pizza joint doing a quick toss of toppings. This was crafted with care.
The first bite was nothing short of delicious!!!! I love the flatbread style of this pizza — it’s light, sweet, and flavorful, perfectly baked with a little crunch on the edges and just enough chew to hold its own. You can taste that balance between art and comfort food. The Garlic Shallot Oil hits first — rich, aromatic, and just enough to make you pause and appreciate it. Then comes that 5 Cheese Blend, a creamy, melty harmony that dances with every bite. The fresh tomatoes pop with a little burst of sweetness, and then the basil brings it home with that fragrant, slightly peppery freshness.
The basil really does it for me. It gives the whole pizza this nice flavor nuance that’s amazing. It reminded me instantly of a good Capresé salad, one of my favorite simple pleasures. Anything that reminds me of eating Capresé is a plus in my book, and Slim & Husky’s nailed that vibe. There’s something about how the cheese and basil meet the drizzle of marinara that creates a perfect storm of Italian-inspired soul food.
I sat there at the table, taking my time, letting each bite linger. The mood was satisfying, almost meditative. The sunlight poured through the windows, the playlist bounced between old-school R&B and new wave soul, and for a moment I forgot I’d just driven three and a half hours for this experience. It felt like home — a place that celebrates community, flavor, and creativity all in one.
Slim & Husky’s isn’t just a pizza shop; it’s a cultural experience. From the art-covered walls to the names of the pizzas — like “Got 5 On It” and “Rony, Roni, Rone’” — you can tell this place was built with personality. It’s unapologetically urban, proudly rooted in its Black Southern identity, and still manages to bring a universal appeal that food lovers of all kinds can appreciate.
And let’s talk about that crust again. That flatbread-style crust is the real MVP. It’s light enough that you don’t feel overly full, yet flavorful enough that you crave it after the last slice. I’ve had a lot of pizza where the crust is just there — a delivery vehicle for toppings. But at Slim & Husky’s, the crust matters. It’s got that subtle sweetness that plays beautifully with the garlic and cheese, giving the pizza this incredible depth that’s both soulful and fresh.
As I finished my meal, I looked around and realized everyone seemed to be having that same “first bite” moment — that slow head nod, that smile that creeps up when you know you’ve found something special. It’s rare that a restaurant captures a whole vibe so effortlessly, but Slim & Husky’s does it with style and heart.
Driving back to St Louis later that day, I couldn’t help but think about how the best food journeys are the ones that surprise you with comfort. That 4 ½ hour drive from Nashville to St Louis was more than worth it. The Red Light Special wasn’t just a pizza — it was an experience of flavor, culture, and craftsmanship that reminded me why I love exploring food in the first place.
Slim & Husky’s in Nashville is more than a pizzeria — it’s a celebration of taste, art, and community. And for me, that sunny day, that slice, and that drive combined into one unforgettable food memory.
